Safe Energy Program

With our newly developed Safe Energy Program MCE connects the dots of all aspects of Missouri energy issues from the big picture down to essential details. With your support we will be able to take our Safe Energy Program to the next level by advocating for healthy, equitable, and sustainable energy policies in Missouri.

Missouri Coalition for the Environments 2012 goals for Safe Energy:

  • Advocate for the highest safety standards at the Callaway Nuclear Reactor: As the reactor approaches the end of its designed life, concerns about the ongoing safety of this aging plant are elevated. As Ameren Missouri seeks a license extension for its reactor at Callaway, we will be asking how safe such an extension will be and what assurances might be obtained.
  • Promote Energy Efficiency to reduce energy demand because Missouri ranks near the bottom in energy efficiency. Missouri has tremendous potential to put the energy we already have to work. See the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE) Report from 2011 which outlines some key policies that can spur job creation while reducing the amount of energy we waste.
  • Defend Missouri’s consumer protection law to protect rate payers from pre-construction charges for utility construction. Since 1976 the Missouri Coalition for the Environment has joined consumer protection organizations and others to defend our state’s law against charging ratepayers for a power plant before it is delivering electricity. Having ratepayers underwrite the expansion of nuclear power and taking on all the risk while the shareholders skim just the profits is unfair.

Missouri Coalition for the Environment filmed the above video to show that having ratepayers pay for the construction of a second nuclear reactor, the most expensive form of energy production known to man, is bad policy and that Ameren shareholders should remain responsible for its future investments.
